Board Opposes HB 751 School Transfer Bill

NH NEWPORT — Newport board opposes HB 751 open-enrollment bill. The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to oppose House Bill 751, which would allow student open enrollment while home districts receive only 80 percent of per-pupil funding. Kathy Hubert warned that five Newport-to-Sunapee transfers would cost Newport $152,000 in revenue and require a property-tax increase of $0.20.
Town Manager Kyle Harris presented a preliminary 2026 budget with a $7.96 tax rate, up from $7.43, primarily driven by 102 percent health-insurance increases. The Board agreed to advance a speed-limit reduction to 25 mph on Cross and Canal Streets to public hearing.
