Heritage Commission approves downtown historic district ordinance

NH NEWPORT — Heritage Commission endorses downtown historic district expansion. The Newport Heritage Commission/Monuments and Memorials Committee approved an updated Historic District Ordinance that will expand commission oversight beyond the existing Town Common Historic District to include a proposed downtown historic district area. Michael Loftus was unanimously re-elected Chairman and Andrea Thorpe as Vice Chairman.

The commission approved a Monument and Memorial Application form for posting as a PDF on the town website and voted unanimously to advance the ordinance, which will appear as a warrant article at the 2026 Town Meeting for voter approval. Dean Stetson was welcomed as the commission's newest member.
